Album Review: Lord Almighty – Wither (Self Released)
Hard-to-pigeonhole black metal-centered outfit Lord Almighty is proud to announce their second album, Wither. Set for release on Friday, October 16th. It is the follow up to the group’s 2015 debut album, Paths.
Black metal? Rock and roll? Black and roll? Maybe that last one is the best way to describe what Lord Almighty produce. A ingrate, bastardised mash-up of styles that really has no right existing, let alone sounding so damn exciting.
It does exists and its cries for attention are near impossible to ignore. 11 meaty and furious offerings offset by some down-right rocking riff work and high-powered energy. The frantic nature of Wither is clear from the very start. The excellent Cry of the Earth getting the blood pumping with hefty drum work and building guitars with a ton of payoff.
Elsewhere, Mercy is a wilder and more black oriented effort. The full power of Lord Almighty’s dark side expelled for all to hear. Whereas the post-tinge to the guitars of Rise is downright thrilling stuff. This is Lord Almighty at their bravest and most affecting, especially as they’re never too far away from throwing out another enlightening curve ball.
Such as the drum/effects only V (short enough to not annoy) which flows perfectly into the following groove of Dispute. Another heavyweight offering on an album chock full of them.
There’s a ton of highlights throughout Wither and every track quickly becomes a firm favourite for varying reasons. Maybe it’s the thick and sticky sound of Adrift? Or the grander start to Hour by Hour which gives way to a foot-tapper of a beat and then onwards into scarring blackness?
Find your own favourite by accepting Lord Almighty have nailed black and roll.
