Album Review: Canadensis – The Decades Apart Have Weathered Us Both (Medicine for a Nightmare)

Spacey drone/post-rock experimentalists Canadensis present their third album, The Decades Apart Have Weathered Us Both, which will be out on 29 July 2022 via the duo’s own publishing venture, Medicine for a Nightmare.

An experience like no other, The Decades Apart Have Weathered Us Both is a difficult album to talk about. It’s made up of elements that will be familiar to fans of drone and post-rock. Yet, the intense experimentation that Canadensis showcase makes it something so very different.

This album is described as something that explores missing fragments of the soul, traumatically lost or discarded by ego as it morphs through time. What might have been if issues were worked through instead of shed? Even if reunited, would the two parts still reject each other? It’s been so long.

Something that you could dismiss as nonsense until you press play and the incredible atmosphere of The Decades Apart Have Weathered Us Both washes over. A deep, moving, ambient slow burn of an album that relaxes the mind and soothes the soul in unexpected ways. Yet, also delivers shocking moments of horror. Lose yourself, allow yourself to drift, Canadensis make it so easy. The first track alone, The Shedding, lasting over 30 minutes and leaves the mind in a state of euphoria.

Especially when, around the halfway point, it changes into something much darker and harsher to the ears. Just when you think you understand Canadensis, they reveal a side to them that is downright uncomfortable to listen too.

 

 

Such wild and wacky experimentation continues into the 20+ minutes of That Day I Felt Lighter. Where the emotional value of this record is heightened and the sense of drifting through the colourful and peaceful cosmos is ever present.

Shorter by the standard set already, Completely Incomplete sends echoes of missed and lost opportunities hurtling through the mind. An example of how the ideas that the album explores does come through to the listener. Before Canadensis wraps things up with the super-short and ominous finale of As the Fog Swallowed the Beacon’s Light.

Truly an experience like no other.
