Album Review: Dekant – Blooms Of Loathe And Hate (Self Released)

Scottish melodic black metal solo-project, Dekant is back with a brand-new album called ‘Blooms of Loathe and Hate’. Released on June 17th, 2022.

 

 

I’ve been enjoying what Dekant has had to offer with the previous album, 2019’s ‘A Rose Will Die’ and 2017’s demo ‘Trials and Tribulations’. So, there’s some excitement surrounding this new release. Excitement that is well justified as it goes.

You see Dekant’s combination of melody, black, death and doom metal has reached a higher plateau with Blooms of Loathe and Hate. An album that has meaning and depth, ion and anger, cynicism and honesty. An album that is experimental and challenging. There’s no doubt that Dekant cares little for your expectations or likes. Just give the combination of Loathe and Lavender a shot to see just how perplexing the music can be. The former, airy and melodic all the way through. The latter, distorted and doomy. The one thing they share in common is the sense of growing darkness.

Perplexing because you can never predict what might happen next. What new idea or direction might come from Dekant. Experimental but not to the detriment of the music as structurally, it’s quite captivating. Even further proof coming from the apex that is Orchids. A track that features eerie melodic tones, a mix of fuzzy reverb and cleaner rhythms, whispered vocals and a more progressive sound than expected. What an excellent piece of music this is.

A rawer and darker tone makes Dreams? a harsh but enigmatic listen. Before two mammoth and monolithic tracks in the form of Tulips and Sakura come along. Combined, over 20-minutes long, and filled with heavy, doomy, death-infused black metal bleakness.

Finally, the aptly titled Hate and a barn-burner of misery, darkness and hellacious black-driven horror. An impressive finale on what is Dekant’s best work to date. Imaginative and interesting.
