Album Review: Deliberate Miscarriage – Mortuary Melodies (Self Released)

Hailing from the dark valleys of South Wales, Deliberate Miscarriage write technically adept death metal, revealing all on their debut album, Mortuary Melodies. It will be released on December 10th, 2021.

You better have a strong stomach if you’re going to welcome Deliberate Miscarriage into your mind. These sick gits will be doing everything possible to have it doing flips, until you’re vomiting up your guts.

Mortuary Melodies is 14 horrid, ill-mannered and vile tracks of death metal infused with razor sharp technicality and tasteless sense of humour. What’s not to love? Spitting up blood and teeth, snarling with all the intensity of a wild, starving wolf and delivering a masterclass in heavy, hard-hitting noise. Deliberate Miscarriage are miles ahead of what you might expect from a death metal band on their debut album.

Don’t be put off by the sheer number of bludgeoning blows they deliver; this is a tight album with tracks that burn quickly but hot. The punishing speed, the heavy and harsh tempos, the roaring technicalities that burst forth like some kind of alien being… it’s nowhere as insufferable as you might expect.

What’s particularly welcome is how the twisted track titles hide what is often a much more detailed and nuanced listen. We all say ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ but who isn’t seeing a track title like Splattered Toddlers, Exhumed & Molested, Masochistic Masturbation and Fresh Abortion Smoothie, and presuming to know exactly what this band sounds like?

You expect heavy, you expect the sound of blood being split, you expect the sounds of suffering to emanate from within. That’s fine, that’s part of what this album brings, but Deliberate Miscarriage revel in surprising too. The number of clever twists, rhythmic shifts, dirty tonal turns and fascinating technical riffing is what thrills.

But… the grin on their faces is a warning of hellish behaviour to come.
