Album Review: Drallion – New Machine (Self Released)

Hailing from Bournemouth in the UK, Drallion are a progressive metalcore band who have just released their debut album, New Machine.

New progressive metalcore from the shores of Blighty!? Yes, freaking please. Drallion enter the fray with an album that hits bloody hard. Aggressive and intense, but also layered with dramatic effects and melody. A combination that they make seem so natural and work to offer up their own interesting take on familiar sounds. Neither progressive detail or metalcore tricks dominating the other. It’s a perfectly balanced sound that means New Machine is exciting from beginning to end.

Eleven tracks long, most will get a feel for what Drallion have to offer with the first two tracks; Bloodshot and Killing Sun. Drallion showcasing ripping instrumentation, ferocious soloing, sci-fi infused effects, a gothic symphonic style segment, roaring guttural growls and soaring choruses. If you’re not madly in love with this band already, get your ears cleaned out.

If you are, that will only deepen as Drallion continue to showcase just how creative they are as a group. Banger after banger, delivering moody and sinister tones with the title track or offering up something with an alternative twist and synthy weirdness on Skin.

How about the epic Song for a Fall? A track that is over eight-minutes in length and begins with a medley of keys before exploding into groove heaviness. A track that evolves into something progressively comprehensive and unconventionally challenging. It is exhausting.

Which does make the shorter and sharper pairing of Iron Shogun and Switch all the more palatable. Aside from the fact that both are glorious head-bangers too.

The latter part of the album certainly doesn’t lack impact even if the depth of imagination that Drallion have is excessive. It just means we get melodic metalcore like Never Forever, alt-tinged moodiness like Parasite, smash-mouth intensity like Extermination and soaring epics like Remission. It’s impossible to get bored listening to this album, there’s just so much going on and the more times you hear it, the more you uncover.

A banger debut that puts Drallion firmly on the map of metal.
