Album Review: Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate – The Uncertainty Principle (Glass Castle Recordings)
On their 8th album, ‘The Uncertainly Principle’ the alternative, progressive, and experimental rock band, Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate explore the history of uncertainty. Out via Glass Castle Recordings, the album is available to buy/stream on Bandcamp and will get a general release on May 30th, 2025.

While in life it’s fair to say that we can never be certain about anything, there are things we can approach with a degree of confidence that is close to certainty. One such example is the confidence long-term listeners will have when it comes to Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate music and the eclectic nature of it. It can be an incredibly challenging experience, but it’s also one of the most rewarding.
Perhaps there can be no better summation of this new album than the one that insists you have patience and give it time to breathe. However, it also must be stated that this is an accessible album from the start. Experimental and progressive music might be intrinsic to the Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate sound, but they also know how to write rousing, temperamental, dramatic, vivid, and (occasionally) catchy tunes. It’s madness, but it’s controlled madness.
They truly are something special and this new album captures so much of that. Beginning in moody and mellow style, the melody has a playfulness to it, and the vocals are subtly sung. Then, with a bang, it powers up and, bit by bit, comes to life. It’s a marvel of an opening track, especially with the big guitar solo that comes right at the end.
It’s an easy album to rave about, especially as following that slice of brilliance, we get a more contained alt-rocker with grungy undertones. It’s Everything Changed and it’s very likable. Sitting comfortably alongside the first of several instrumental hits, The Ultraviolet Catastrophe. Here, aside from vigorous guitar playing, there’s some wacked out synth that make this one special. It’s downright cinematic!
How does all of this, and all that follows, fit the concept though? Well, that’s going to be down to the individual and their own perception of uncertainty and its effect. However, Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate have based a lot of this album on real-world events and stories. Such as basing Copenhagen on Philip K Dick’s Ubik, a 1969 science fiction novel. Adding theatre and atmosphere to the point where it feels like a soundtrack. The vocals on this, laid over the calm melody, are great here.
Don’t sink too much into that one though as there is still so much to come. Cause and Effect (But Not Necessarily in That Order), a track with body-shaking instrumental heft that showcases a ton of eccentricities, and then elaborate and expressive storytelling via the title track. They are two of the finest examples of Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate creative thinking.
Of course, things don’t get any less immersive as the album enters its latter stages. There’s Inside the Atom, another instrumental and one of the more complex sounding. There’s The Think Tank, which has some old-school rock vibes and moves with some groove. One Word That Means the World (Arkhipov) has instrumental flair but is held together by the thrumming bass and infectious chorus. Then, there is the beautiful Between Two Worlds, where words won’t quite do this track justice. Rest assured; it will touch your soul.
It would be an excellent finale, expect that would mean we wouldn’t have Living With Uncertainty to enjoy. Even with this track, there will be little doubt in anyone’s mind that Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate have delivered something special once again. The future isn’t certain, but as long as it features this band, it doesn’t seem so dark.
