Album Review: SURE – Destruction of Form (Frozen Records)

Escape from your life & the march of the world and recklessly dance on the ashes of your past. French trio SURE will release their brand-new album, ‘Destruction of Form’ on March 14th, 2025, via Frozen Records.

If you desperately need to place SURE in a genre, the most obvious is industrial, but it does the band, and this album, a disservice. SURE has worked hard to throw off the shackles that come with genre placement, and the best way to sum up this record comes from the feelings it evokes, and some of which are mightily confusing.

Such as the desire to sway sexily to the dark hues of Choose Innocence as the electronica acts like a heartbeat and the vocals add melodic drama. It’s like Depeche Mode had a baby with Health, then that baby grew up into an adult and one night, stumbled in a scuzzy underground club where EDM and industrial music blasted out from the speakers, salacious things were happening in each corner, and the strobe lighting make it all feel like a fever dream. That is the summation of this track, but it’s also a summation of the album, and SURE as a whole. It just so happens that variety is a key component too.

Hence why we get a more sinister sounding synth focused effort with Paper Planes and can appreciate the wicked sensuality of Deeper. Together they offer engrossing industrial intensity and haunting melodic effects. Proving, once again, to be best described as an experience.

An experience that continues to be highly inventive as Keep on Living showcases an experimental dance floor style anthem. Sure at their most infectious, but also at their most meaningful. The melody, the smoothness of the vocals, the energetic upticks, the danceable beats, it’s a track with so much to offer, and a highlight of the album.

Happily, there are plenty more still to come. Tracks where you can feel the vibrant hues in your soul. Such as the haunting, and powerful, Après La Nuit, which features FANGE. As well as the ion that oozes out of Swaying, the old-school tone of Belong to the Past (I get some Stabbing Westward vibes here), and the mysterious, but intense, Secret. Each taste of SURE comes with an explosion of flavour, and while not every mouthful is going to be enjoyable to all, the sharp and vivid experience makes it unforgettable, regardless.

It flies by too, and in a whirlwind of ethereal electronica noise, Sleep Demon crawls into minds. Before the album closes out with the title track, which features PENCEY SLOE, and delivers a glorious showcase of melody. Where haunting soundscapes meet intense post-like power. It’s an incredible finale and the cherry on top of a hugely enjoyable listen. SURE are a unique band, and defy all genre classifications in style.
