EP Review: Halfway Home – Winter (Self Released)
Halfway Home are a dynamic five-piece alternative band from the UK, set to unleash their highly anticipated sophomore EP, ‘Winter’. It will be released on March 20th, 2025.
A cathartic journey through the darkest corners of anxiety and depression, Winter is an emotional release. One that wears its heart on its sleeve and is all the better for it. Halfway Home’s willingness to be so authentically honest adds so much impact to the gloom that surrounds this EP, but it’s heartening to see it end up in a more uplifting place, showing that it is possible to come out the other side, battle-worn but unbroken.
Wow. Just wow. This is so special. Be warned, this will affect you, no matter your experiences with the subject matter. Beginning with a recording of two people discussing (presumably a doctor and a patient) the debilitating effects anxiety and depression can have on a person. The latter’s attempt to verbalise how they feel is staggering, and it will bring tears to your eyes, especially as Halfway Home play really moving melody alongside it and perfectly flow into their own imioned outburst.
It is a tough track to move on from, but move on we must, especially as their alternative metalcore crossed with post-hardcore style arrives with mighty aplomb on the following Leeches, Dreamawake, and The Edge. All are more obviously anthemic and accessible tracks, filled with deep melodic ion and powerful metal orientated heaviness. Halfway Home showing off varied sound, an extravagant amount of depth to the vocals, and infectious instrumentals.
However, there’s nothing better here than Ego Death. A structure that sees Halfway Home deliver something so powerful and so uplifting, that it puts a smile on the face. A soft, and in some cases, strained smile, but it’s a smile none the less. It is one of the most expressive tracks I’ve ever heard. A track so good that it makes this release a 10/10 alone, but don’t let that understate the brilliance of everything else.
Feel the emotion, don’t bury it, connect with this EP, and let the tears flow, you might feel better for it.
