EP Review: Hypermass – Apparition Day (Seek & Strike)
Norway’s Hypermass return with a their much-anticipated new EP, ‘Apparition Day’, on March 7th, 2025, via Seek and Strike.
The hype is so freaking real, and rightfully, this new EP is hotly anticipated. So much so, that the electricity can be felt in the air as the first track, Supernova Collective, comes crashing out of the starting gates. Showcasing the incredible modern metal flair crossed with progressive and anthemic intensity that makes this band so special. It will get the heart racing and the head banging.
Cult Vendor is next and with it comes a stompy, aggressive vibe that has Hypermass sounding angrier than ever. Yet, they still retain their anthemic qualities, turning in a track that goes very hard, but has so much groovy style too. It’s an aspect of the band that proves to be so likable, even as Neovortex comes with gut-churning techy guitars and scathing vocals. The highlight of that track? The bright and brilliant soloing near the end. A spectacular moment.
Though there is nothing to complain about with the frenzied pit inducing hardcore-tinged carnage of Headcase. A barnburner of track that even has some showy guitar parts, and one that will please any sane fan of heavy music.
Expectations well and truly met, but it’s not quite over yet as A Perfect Imbalance wraps things up in style. Where all the great bits of this band, and there are a lot, come together in a flurry of progressively tinged, groove-infused, mayhem-inducing noise. It’s another class listen, one of the more expansive and expressive, and confirms what we all already knew, this band is great.
