EP Review: Lumens – Lumens (Wild Thing Records)

Adelaide prog-metalcore outfit Lumes with release their self-titled EP on April 11th, 2025, via Wild Thing Records. An EP that dives deep into the raw complexities of existence. Navigating inner battles, defiance, identity, and the search for freedom.

Lumens are part of the new wave of metalcore bands taking the best elements of the past (heavy and melodic – balanced perfectly) and giving it a more modern bite. Not only does this result in something meaner and more chaotic sounding, but often, it results in something so much more anthemic. Case in point, this EP. Except that’s only half the picture.

The other half relates to their progressive thinking and clever creative techniques. Which they display across five epic tracks. Be warned, this might only be an EP with five tracks, but each is a hefty listen so time and patience is needed. However, Lumens make it easy as their stylish and dynamic approach to progressive metalcore is so initially appealing and then, once it has hold, it tightens its grip with a variety of dramatic and cinematic pleasures. This really is such a strong showcase of modernised metalcore.

Five tracks, beginning in vivid style with Primrose, Lumens might have intense melodic chops, but this is a track with some beastliness to it. Then along comes Hollow Heart and Saviour of Peace, with the former having so much ion to it, and the latter having explosive moments of metal. Lumens sound great here.

They also sound great on In Too Deep as well, showcasing a more robust metalcore edge, especially as the track transitions from complex speed and ferocity to melody, notably in the chorus. Finally, it’s Dreamstate and guess what? It goes hard and has immense layers of inspired detail that makes it so much more. It, like everything else on the EP, is uniquely listenable, with each new play uncovering fresh delights.
