EP Review: Monsutà – Monsutà (Self Released)

Out on October 21st 2017, Monsutà is the debut EP from the French nu-metal five-piece band of the same name. Four tracks of aggressive & ugly metal based around the evil & corruption that reigns in every circle of power.

Nu-metal has been a bit of a dirty term within metal for a long time but the last couple of years has seen a resurgence to extremely mixed results. Whereas fans seem to enjoy the nostalgic side of things, new bands have struggled to make grounds. Monsutà combine both, having an old school nu-metal vibe in the likes of Under Your Spell but then having a more modern metal edge in the likes of Our Grave.

The latter has a decent beat with a nice bit of aggression mixed with melody however the latter is playing by the nu-metal playbook far too much. It’s got some cool sounding trippy guitar sounds & a catchy chorus though.

The influences of the likes of early Rage Against the Machine shines on Anger, the shouty/rap vocal style is pretty appealing. Especially as the breakdowns really work. The EP ends on the best track of the bunch, Numb Again. The chorus proving that Monsutà have some good song-writing ability in them.

It’s hard to get excited about nu-metal in 2017 & the reality is it’s very difficult to do anything new within a sub-genre that was run into the ground many years ago. Monsutà make a commendable effort to not just sound true to the nu-metal sound but offer something fresh too.
