EP Review: Through The Canopy – Descension (Self Released)

In the hazy aftermath of a Pentagram concert in Trondheim, Norway, in late 2016, the lineup of Through The Canopy was completed. Since then the band has not looked back. Through The Canopy is hard and heavy, soft and fragile; all at the same time. This is exemplified on their EP, Descension which will be released January 15th 2019 through our own label, Sidehorn Records, and distributed through All Good Clean Records.

 

The two tracks that make up Descension are spectacular filled songs that take the listener on a wild ride of melody, rock rhythm and heavy riffs. Seven Days begins with a post-rock style of softness before the pace increases and the guitars play out a twisted tune. From this point on what we get is a combo of sombre vocals, energetic yelps and pressing riffs. The track twists and turns in a number of directions with a constant underhanded cache of groove to really get the foot tapping and the head banging.

A bloody great start.

Illusion Lost doesn’t move too far from the same idea. Sombre but light melodies that build in volume until you can’t take anymore. This is when the track really comes to life as Through the Canopy show off some intense guitar work and leave you begging for more. Much more.
