EP Review: Trébuchet SDG – Lux Mundi (The Charon Collective)
Taking its inspiration from the medieval times, classical music, and the Scriptures, solo project Trébuchet SDG is headed up by multi-instrumentalist Josam. Now, Trébuchet SDG delivers black metal fans a Christmas gift this holiday season. It’s called ‘Lux Mundi’, out now via The Charon Collective, and features three classic Christmas hymns, re-interpreted.
A three track EP to spread a bit of festive misery, Lux Mundi has an effect on the mind, thanks to a creative style that makes the music feel ancient and cold. Yes, it is black metal, and the harshness of the genre is on display throughout, but dark melodies and primitive ambience make it so much more.
Is it Christmassy though? That’s up for debate, and entirely depends on your point of view. Do you want bright lights, warm fires, and cups of hot chocolate? Or do you prefer a more primordial period? Where the devil dances in the snowstorm outside and all you can do is huddle around the fireplace and hope you’re able to find some food in the frozen tundra soon. That’s not just a cold wind, that’s death, and it cuts right through to the bone.
Doesn’t it speak volumes about the power of this EP that this is the kind of imagery it creates in such a short amount of time? All the work of one entity too, who manages to take the familiar (the blacker side of metal) and turn it into something even more grotesque. Yet, it’s utterly fascinating and its brilliance is shown with aplomb on the opening tome, Part I. Kanom Nouel / Lux Mundi.
Whereas that track is wholly unique, the following two (Part II. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen / Le Sommeil De L’enfant Jésus and Part III. What Child Is This / Ave Christvs Rex) have had their fair share of covers and don’t appear to be reinvented… at first. Hold on though, as Trébuchet SDG is on such incredible creative form and both these tracks have twists and turns that will delight all those who look forward to receiving a lump of coal in their stocking.
Merry bloody Christmas, indeed.
