Arguably some of our proudest lyrical work, ‘Lonely Valentines’ was inspired by Charles Baudelaire’s use of rhyming structures and sticks strongly to the album title’s namesake “Broken Hearts & Bad Habits.” The song takes us on the journey of a lovelorn heart but nevertheless demands movement. This is absolutely a dance tune from start to finish.

Skies Turn Black are an electronic metal band from the North of England, taking influence from guitar driven heavy metal and incorporating features of dance music. Their brand of metal can chop and change genre, to go from being rich in 80’s heavy metal nostalgia with riffs and huge choruses to keytar led synth sections with aggressive drops that still packs that heavy punch.
Since the release of ‘No Place Like Home’ (“One of the best guitar albums of the year” – Metal Hammer) in 2018, Skies Turn Black have added a keytar to line up, diversifying their sound to explore what genre bending electronics can add to the heavy metal at the core of the band. The result has taken the heaviness of dance music such as dubstep, to create an impactful twist to your run of the mill metal.
Since their appearance at Bloodstock 2023, the band have played across the UK, performing at sold out shows in Sunderland, Nottingham, Huddersfield and Bristol. Away from the stage, the band have worked tirelessly to refine their sound. The end result being their stunning new album ‘Broken Hearts & Bad Habits’.
The new album puts more focus than ever on hooks, whilst keeping the band’s intricate guitar work and anthemic choruses. Every song on the album exposes a vulnerability, addressing personal issues of love and lust, heartbreak and depression, as each song undertakes a journey of self-worth. Each song can be categorised as either a “Broken Heart” or a “Bad Habit” song.
The first half of the album sees the band embrace their pop influences introducing their audience to its new killer sound. Songs Like “Moment in the Moonlight” and “Angel” showcase technical guitar work and huge dance sections with hooks that will be sure to stay in your head all day. The second half of the album explores a wider range of genres with 80s hair metal throwback socks such as “Bullet in My Heart” and heavier riff-based songs such as “On The Run”. This eclectic mix will take the listener on a musical journey sure to keep them on the edge of the seat, not quite sure what is next in store for them.
The final two songs of the album include the atmospheric “Andromeda” combining modernized guitar work with the album’s electronic sound. “Edge of the World” is an emotional finale. A true rock ballad that shows raw honesty with its lyrics. Orchestral accompaniments huge anthemic vocals and emotional guitar solos bringing the band to new levels of self-expression.
Regardless of your favourite metal sub-genre, ‘Broken Hearts & Bad Habits’ has a track that you will love.
