Album Review: Slyder Smith & The Oblivion Kids – Charm Offensive (Cargo Records)

Slyder Smith takes centre stage leading his new power trio, Slyder Smith & The Oblivion Kids (featuring Tim Emery on bass and drummer Rik Pratt). Their debut album ‘Charm Offensive’ will be released through Ray Records on 12” black vinyl, digipak CD and digital on 19th August 2022, and is distributed worldwide via Cargo Records.

An apt title because this music is undeniably charming and Slyder Smith & The Oblivion Kids know exactly how to deliver a boisterous rock experience. A collection of groovy, infectious and anthemic rockers that is fun and exiting from beginning to end.

Pick any track you want; it’s going to have something likeable about it. From the groovy and danceable Calico Queen, to the infectious pop-punker that is When the Rain Comes, to the melodic twang and singable chorus of Crash Landing in Teenage Heaven. The first half of the album features some really memorable tunes.

As does what comes after. Where energetic rocking foot-tappers like Pleasure Victim, heartfelt and meaningful sounds like Hope Without Warning and the absurdly fun cover of the NeverEnding Story. The much-beloved Giorgio Moroder and Klaus Doldinger song from the iconic movie. Although you might know it from being featured in Stranger Things depending on your age.

If you can’t tell by this stage, Charm Offensive is a blast and you can really tell that Slyder Smith & The Oblivion Kids were having a lot of fun here. It’s infectious, helped by the super simple fact, that the album is banger after banger. As Slyder sings on Oblivion Kids:

I want to be with the Oblivion Kids.

Something that we can all agree we want to be part of too.

Charm Offensive indeed, through sheer quality and talent, Slyder Smith & The Oblivion Kids will win over everyone that presses play on this debut album.
