Album Review: Dissonant Seepage – Dystopian Putrescence (Comatose Music)

New York’s brutal death metal band, Dissonant Seepage, are back with their second full length album, ‘Dystopian Putrescence’. It will be released on June 6th, 2025, via Comatose Music.

On days where you just want to hear something savage, something angry, something that is downright primordial, you can always rely on a band like Dissonant Seepage to deliver all fury and hate that you desire. Offering up nothing more than a slab of garish viciousness, where nuance has been thrown in the garbage, and the goal is to simply leave the listener feeling like they’ve been beaten bloody and left for dead.

However, don’t let this summation suggest that Dissonant Seepage haven’t put a ton of effort into this album. Heaviness like this does not come easily, and to keep it interesting across eight tracks takes talent. That is what Dissonant Seepage has by the gore-filled bucket load, and they delight in showing off that creativity.

First, with the instrumental pulverisation that is dished out by Ancient Pestilence Reborn, where weighty riffs meet hammering drums, the guitar squeals sound like victims crying out for mercy, and the vocals are deep, guttural, and gurgling. Then with the manic intensity of Immortal Until Decay where just a touch of groove gives this a more energised feel. Before the first half of the album wraps up in violent and vitriolic style via a pair of ugly and harsh tracks called Constructing Flesh into Shit and Rotting Monument. Trust me, if you’ve made it this far, Dissonant Seepage have their claws dug in deep now.

So, what are you expecting from the second half of the record? It’s not like Dissonant Seepage are going to suddenly pull out a melodic, progressive indie rock banger, are they? No, of course not, what the second half offers is the same level of intensity, even more layers of brutality, and a focus that shows off their personal development. This is a more refined record, even if the smooth edges are harder to find than the jagged and sharp ones.

Faster than ever, with screeching guitar flashes and the chunkiest of riffs, Gargling Nails is an album highlight. One that is (almost) matched by the methodical bludgeoning sound of Optimize Extinction. Whereas Dead Carcass to Worship might not have anything specific to note, it is still a strong showcase of frenzied death metal in its vilest form. As is the title track, the album finale, although here it would be remiss of me if I didn’t mention the drumming in this track. Oof.
